Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC)

AIR FORCE JROTC I (AEROSPACE SCIENCE I) 1 credit

Prerequisite: None (Grades 9-12)

This course of study consists of two parts: Aerospace Science (AS-1) and Leadership Education (LE-1).  AS-1 is entitled "A Journey into Aviation History," and covers the history of aviation from ancient times through modern day.  LE-1 focuses on leadership, character and citizenship instruction.  Students also participate in drill teams, parades, color guards, and other program activities.  All uniforms, including uniform shoes, are provided by the Air Force.  Enrollment in AFJROTC does not obligate a student to any military service.


AIR FORCE JROTC II (AEROSPACE SCIENCE II) 1 credit

Prerequisite: Air Force JROTC I Grades 10-12

This course of study consists of two parts: Aerospace Science (AS-2) and Leadership Education (LE-2). AS-2, entitled "The Science of Flight," covers basic scientific principles of aviation such as the aerospace environment, aerospace physiology, aerospace vehicles, aerodynamics and aerial navigation.  LE-2 focuses on communication skills and cadet corps activities.   Information is provided on communicating effectively, understanding groups and teams, preparing for leadership, solving conflicts and problems, and personal development.  Written reports and speeches compliment the academic materials.  Cadet corps activities include holding positions of greater responsibility in the planning and execution of corps projects.  Students continue participation in drill teams, parades, color guards, and other program activities.  All uniforms, including uniform shoes, are provided by the Air Force.  Enrollment in AFJROTC does not obligate a student to any military service.


AIR FORCE JROTC III (AEROSPACE SCIENCE III) 1 credit

Prerequisite: Air Force JROTC II Grades 11-12

This course of study consists of two parts: Aerospace Science (AS-3) and Leadership Education (LE-3). AS-3, entitled "The Exploration of Space," covers basic astronomy and space travel, including propulsion systems, space vehicles, orbits and interplanetary travel.  LE-3, "Life Skills and Career Opportunities," focuses on career opportunities and how to acquire them with skills such basic financial operations, budgeting, saving, and gaining/maintaining employment by acquiring interviewing skills and resume-building techniques. Students continue practice in drill and ceremony, but involvement now is in an instructional and supervisory role.  All uniforms, including uniform shoes, are provided by the Air Force.  Enrollment in AFJROTC does not obligate a student to any military service.

 

The Aerospace Science and Leadership Education Curriculum have four course levels.  Each level covers a full academic school year with a minimum of 180 hours of instruction.  Students wishing to enroll in any course high than AS-I require the approval of the Senior Aerospace Science Instructor.

AS-100: 

A Journey into Aviation History.  The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop knowledge of the historical development of flight and the role of the military in history.

LE-100: 

Citizenship, Character, and Air Force Traditions.  Students will develop knowledge of the AFJROTC, individual self-control, citizenship, wellness, health, and fitness. Students practice basic drill techniques and conduct military ceremonies.
AS-200:  Global and Cultural Studies.  This course will introduce students to various regions of the world from a geographic, historical and cultural perspective.  The course provides increased international awareness and insight into foreign affairs that permits a more educated understanding of other cultures and enhanced knowledge of America’s interests and role in the world.

LE-200: 

Communication, Awareness, and Leadership.  Students will develop effective communication skills in writing and speaking, understanding of human and group behavior, and basic leadership concepts. Students practice drill movements and observe military customs and ceremonies.
AS-300:  The Exploration of Space.  The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop knowledge of the space environment, space programs and technology, and manned space flight.

LE-300: 

Life Skills and Career Opportunities.  Students develop knowledge and skills related to planning for postsecondary education or employment, financial planning, and career opportunities. Students polish skills in marching and conducting military ceremonies.
AS-400:  Management of the Cadet Corps.  This class provides the opportunity for cadets to practice leadership and management skill as the plan, organize and direct activities for the Cadet Group.

LE-400: 

Principles of Management.  Students develop fundamental management concepts and skills and apply them in corps activities. Drill and ceremony functions are carried out with ease and professionalism.
HONORS GROUND SCHOOL PROGRAM:  The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop advanced, in-depth knowledge of aerospace topics. Students develop the foundation for receiving a private pilot license.
